Singapore takes pride in being in the fore front of promoting a diverse and talented workforce and society. In many aspects, we promote a meritocracy environment where the best person wins. As we progress, the statistics on women representation in senior executive positions and board level representation falls short of expectations, considering the level of the progress of Singapore as an equal opportunity society.
A lot more can be done both in the public and private sector to promote women representation in the work place. With women making a major proportion of purchasing decisions in the home front as well as workplace, firms will be short changing themselves if they do not learn to take advantage of the voice of women in the board room and senior executive level.
Singapore is definitely not lacking in capable women compared to other countries – as in other areas where we have taken a lead in pushing for what’s good for the country, this important agenda should also be one where we need the collective efforts of government and companies to collaborate and accelerate the active role of women in boards.
